Golf Schools

Anyone who has played golf can attest that while getting started might seem simple enough, it is not an easy game to master. In fact, without skills or practice, it can be extremely frustrating. This is one of the reason golf schools can be a very popular option for golfers and would-be golfers. First and foremost, these schools improve your golfing ability. But they also provide structure and an opportunity to golf, while learning from others, including your professional instructor.

There are many different kinds of golf schools available. Sometimes this will be a semester-long class, akin to something you would take in college. You show up a few times a week and play, and complete a kind of “homework” (usually practice time on the course, or golf-related reading) besides. Usually these courses are taught with larger groups.

It is also possible to take a course with a one-on-one instructor. These typically involve sessions of 1-3 hours from a certified instructor. With time, the instructor will learn some of your weaknesses and be able to work with you individually. In some cases these instructors can include former PGA Tour players. Often more advanced teachers are called master instructors, as opposed to merely being certified.

Of course, you can in fact learn a lot simply by playing the game. Practice makes a lot of difference, and you’ll start to get a feel for which clubs to use in which situations, as well as how to putt. You can also learn certain tips from your golf friends. However, there’s a difference between this kind of knowledge and experience and that which you gain by being tutored by a professional instructor. In fact, if you golf with the same people all the time, you may not realize that you all practice a grip or a swing that isn’t fundamentally sound. While everyone has his or her own style, these fundamentals can make a big difference even for experienced golfers.

Whatever your availability and budget, it is generally the case that if you continue to practice using poor fundamentals you will have a hard time moving your game forward. It can definitely be the case that even with practice you won’t improve tremendously if you don’t learn proper technique. After all, some ways of practice are more productive than others. Further, the advice you get from your golfing friends might be far from expert. A golf school or course can do a lot to help you in these ways.

Of course, as with most things, your budget will have to be taken into consideration as you consider going to a golf school or enrolling in a golf course. Prices for the different kinds of golf schools and courses vary widely. Courses you see advertised on cable which celebrities sign up for can be fairly expensive, and often necessitate additional travel costs. A local class or a private tutor might be surprisingly affordable, however. It just depends on what you want to accomplish. Maybe you want to incorporate golf instruction with a vacation—in that case, paying for a high profile course in a place like Las Vegas or San Diego might seem more worth it.

Golf training DVDs are also available. These can help you improve your technique at home—especially your overall swing and putting ability. You can also practice putting either indoors or outdoors. This is a common office accessory.
